The Challenge

When Jonathan Gooch's father became seriously ill, his family suddenly found themselves navigating the complexities of the NHS, social care and care home funding.

Like many families, Jonathan quickly discovered that understanding the system was often harder than dealing with the decisions themselves.

"There appear to be so many different people doing very similar roles within the NHS and care system. Getting straight answers was difficult, but more importantly, I didn't know what questions I should be asking."

The uncertainty was overwhelming.

With important decisions needing to be made and emotions already running high, Jonathan needed clarity, reliable information and a way to better understand what options were available to his family.

Finding Confidence Through Clarity

Using Podplan's tools, guides and resources, Jonathan was able to build a much clearer understanding of the health and care system.

Instead of feeling overwhelmed by unfamiliar processes and conflicting information, he became more informed, organised and confident.

Most importantly, he felt better equipped to advocate for his father when it mattered most.

"Podplan gave me the confidence to challenge professionals when I needed to. Without that knowledge and confidence, I simply wouldn't have felt able to do that."

A Critical Turning Point

Jonathan's father entered a care home under palliative care arrangements.

At the time, healthcare professionals believed he had less than three months to live, meaning his care costs were covered and not subject to means testing.

However, after receiving the right care and support, his condition improved significantly. Following a reassessment, a decision was made to remove his palliative care status.

Despite the reassessment, those closest to his father's care believed his condition still met the criteria for palliative care.

"The knowledge and confidence I gained through Podplan gave me the conviction to challenge the decision and ask for it to be reconsidered."

Jonathan requested a review.

The decision was subsequently overturned.

The Result

The outcome delivered both financial and emotional benefits for the family.

Maintaining the funding entitlement protected thousands of pounds in care home costs at a time when fees were approximately £2,000 per week.

More importantly, it removed a significant source of worry during an already difficult period.

"It gave the whole family peace of mind. Instead of worrying about money and paperwork, we could focus on spending time with Dad and making the most of the time we had together."

Looking Back

Reflecting on the experience, Jonathan believes that having access to clear information and trusted guidance made a meaningful difference.

"Podplan helped me understand how the system works, the important questions to ask, and where to find reliable information when I needed it.

It gave me confidence at a time when I really needed it and helped us make better decisions as a family."

Would Jonathan Recommend Podplan?

Absolutely.

"It's incredibly stressful having a really sick parent with dementia. Podplan made a genuine difference to our family.
It helped me better understand a complicated system, gave me confidence in the decisions we needed to make, and helped us focus on what mattered most.
I would recommend it in a heartbeat."

Jonathan's Verdict

"The knowledge and confidence I gained through Podplan gave me the conviction to challenge decisions I would otherwise have accepted. That ultimately helped us secure the support my father needed and allowed our family to focus on what really mattered."
